Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
