This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a profound contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when the couple transition from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
